Home Fashion Brogues rise to shoe superstardom

They’ve been a slow burner for a while now but this season brogues are set to continue their rise to shoe superstardom.

The word brogue comes from the process of “brogueing” (punching holes in the leather of shoes). They were first made for men who worked in the boglands of Scotland and Ireland as shoes that could drain water well. Perhaps not the most glamorous of beginnings. The traditional men’s shoe is perhaps one of the most practical and hard-wearing styles we’ve seen in years.

There’s something very “city trader” about brogues; with economic gloom staring us in the face, they almost want us to slip on a pair, bask in recession and discuss the FTSE 100. It’s something the ballet pump could never do.

Now they’ve filtered down to fashion consciousness, they can be found all over the high street. Topshop and Office both have perfectly respectable styles in black, tan and brown leather. However, if you can, opt for an authentic pair from Church’s. Established in 1873 and now owned by Italian powerhouse, Prada, Church’s shoes are the epitome of classic English craftsmanship. For around £200 you can get a pair that has been made by hand and has taken 8-10 weeks to manufacture. They say fashion goes in circles and it looks like this traditional shoemaker is set to gain itself a whole new generation of customers.

The versatility of brogues also adds to their appeal. They add a tougher edge to pretty floral dresses and work equally as well with jeans as they do with tailored trousers. For extra kudos wear without socks for a more modern look. Brogues tap into a certain attitude in society right now; one which craves dependability, durability and good old fashioned manufacturing. Invest in your feet.
