It's official, the hottest colour for lips this season is red. A classic look that's never really gone out of fashion, this summer it's playing a starring role.

After featuring heavily on the runway, red lips are now a firm favourite for the summer, with countless celebrities joining the fan club.

Starlets Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie wear the look to perfection, fashionistas Agyness Deyn, Jaime Winston and Daisy Lowe party hard in theirs, while music maestro's VV Brown and Beth Ditto are literally rocking the red lip.

You don't have to be on the red carpet to enjoy the colour of the summer, any shade will do as long as it is red and there is a red out there for everyone.

For all you sun worshippers, red looks great with a tan but choose one with an orange base to compliment your golden tones, try Poppy Cream from Elizabeth Arden, £16, or Perfect Brick £16, which is brilliant for olive skin tones too.

organic-glam Don't worry fair skinned beauties, you too can wear red, just look for ones with a cooler tone such as the red from Organic Glam £16.59, The Organic Pharmacy's make-up range.

If you're hooked and loving the red effect, get yourself down to Shu Uemura who have a shade for every day of the month. But if you're still not convinced that you and red go together, why not ease yourself in with a sheer lip colour like Sexy Lips from Laura Mercier £17, for just a hint of red, or a slick of Bobbi Brown's new sheer colour gloss, £13.70, for a little taster.

Emma's tips:
I am a massive fan of a strong red lip but always go by the golden rule to make the eyes understated to balance the impact, a slick of black liner and lashings of mascara is more than enough. Must have reds in my kit are Lancomes sophisticated absolu rouge and Nars heatwave which is a strong and zingy 50s red. Outline first with a matching liner to perfect your lipshape and stop bleeding, fill with colour and to finish, soften the edges with a cotton bud."
