Home Beauty How To Judge a Salon? Backwash.
Rush-backwash

If you are anything like me, you'll judge a hair salon by the standard of its backwash area. I mean, there's really no excuse these days for a neck-breakingly uncomfortable hair washing experience when you sometimes have to spend up to 15 minutes in the chair.

So it was a pleasure to discover that my local Rush salon (rush.co.uk) has a completely separate backwash area that takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the main salon, so you can really relax and be pampered for a few minutes. They also throw in a fantastic head massage which makes it extremely hard to get up once your hair has been cleansed and conditioned – as was the case following the luxury hair treatment I experienced during my visit to their Kingston-Upon-Thames salon. Rush in Tottenham Court Road, Baker Street and Moorgate also have separate areas, so go check them out.

Another salon I love for both its attention to detail and stylish shampoo area is Daniel Hersheson in Conduit Street W1 (danielhersheson.com). The backwash chairs are more comfortable than your sofa at home, while the diffused lighting and well trained juniors ensure your hair wash is a truly memorable – yes memorable – experience. And for the total package book in with George – he's a real genius with the scissors.

And then there's JLT (jltsalon.com), just around the corner from the flagship Topshop in Oxford Street, whose futuristic backwash chairs are virtually horizontal, so there's no pressure on your neck whatsoever. Just the ticket for a quick power nap or sleeping off a hangover, and definitely a bonus when you're booked in for a lengthy conditioning treatment or hair colour. And their blow-dries are pretty hot too.
