With summer in full flow, many of us are looking to bicycles as a viable alternative to unreliable public transport and an extension of personal style and taste.
As this month’s tube strike in London proved, there’s really no better way to get around than a bicycle. You get a work out while you lessen your carbon footprint; plus, there is a whole new realm of bikes to explore to cater for all tastes and styles.
Despite many having fears about safety, we are seeing an increase in cycling lanes which could lead to Britain’s cities joining the likes of Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Oslo where the number of bikes is up there with the number of cars.
There are plenty of nice rides to choose from too - especially if you are willing to get stuck into the fixed gear. Coming from echelons of cycle couriering, the fixed gear has a single gear, no brakes and is regarded by many as the purest form of cycling. They are also cheaper, lighter and have less to malfunction.
As well as the offerings from Bianchi, who have just collaborated with ACNE for a great ride, why not support your local bike shop. Were we to invest in a new ride tomorrow we’d probably head to 14 Bike Co., a venture based in Shoreditch specialising in custom single and fixed gear machines. As well as custom frame-sets and complete builds the company looks to be happy to experiment with different finishes and components to really stand out from the crowd. Check out the firm’s blog for examples in glittery green or a deep, rich chocolate bike.
For those seeking something more sedate why not try another style of bike from northern Europe; the Dutch Style. These are simple sit-up-and-beg affairs which can be easily customised with natty baskets for carrying wine and a Frisbee to the park but also look fine being ridden to work by a dapper gent in a Savile Row suit or flappy summer dress.
Cycling is undeniably on the up once more but this time without the lycra, that’s got to be a win-win in anyone’s eyes.
